Friendship 7 – ‘Godspeed, John Glenn.’

Yesterday marked the 57th anniversary of the historic spaceflight of astronaut, John Glenn. On February 20, 1962, he became the first American to orbit the Earth in his spacecraft, Friendship 7. As he journeyed around the planet, Glenn passed above my hometown of Perth, Western Australia. As he sailed over, he famously acknowledged the brightness of the city’s lights, which many inhabitants had left on as a greeting and symbol of solidarity.

Inspired by his courage and the effect the event had on the people of Perth at the time, I have penned a short poem in honour of the occasion which you can read by clicking on the link below. I hope you like it.
