Pandariffic Adelaide!

Just returned from Adelaide where I had a fabulous time at the United Way Read-Aloud at the Zoo Day 2018, and saw some beautiful giant pandas.

Despite the inclement weather, hundreds of families turned up to enjoy a free day at Adelaide Zoo, courtesy of United Way and their partners. I got the chance to ‘perform’ Pandamonia in a raucous shared reading, with many of the kids joining in with their own copy of the book – what an absolute thrill!

I also met one of Australia’s true literary icons, Mem Fox, who read her latest story, ‘I’m Australian Too’. As the author of so many much-loved children’s books, Mem is an inspiration to writers all over Australia, and indeed the world. It was just fantastic to meet such a passionate advocate of Read-aloud.

I must also mention the wonderful Tania Ingram, an Australian author from Adelaide, who shared her latest picture book, ‘Oma’s Buttons’. Tania is a very talented writer who has that amazing ability to write for a variety of age groups. Check out her website.

United Way are doing such good work in supporting the literacy needs of children. I cannot think of a more important cause than supporting reading and encouraging Read-aloud in our communities. If you’re interested in finding out more about the fantastic work they do, or to make a donation, go to the United Way website in your state.

Happy Christmas!

Happy Christmas to you all. I look forward to sharing more creative adventures with you in 2018. Meantime, here’s a festive poem for you to enjoy.

Dear Father Christmas…don’t despair!

Pull on your boots. Pick up your sack.

You must ignore the non-believers,

And your aching back.

Father Christmas, don’t give up!

Despite the doubters that insist,

That you are but a jolly fake,

And really don’t exist.

Father Christmas, carry on!

Load up the toys. Prepare the deer.

Because in you I will believe,

At least for one more year.

Zoobopaloobop! I had an absolute blast at the 2017 Perth Writers Festival Family Day. Thanks to everybody who came down and got into the swing of our Pandamonia show featuring fantastic local jazz band, Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys, and our wonderful swing dancers, the Hullabaloo Hoppers. It was great to work with you all. A special mention to the very talented MC, Glenn Swift.
